Solitonization of Anderson localisation and optical-event horizons

In a paper in arXiv, Mohammed F. Saleh, Claudio Conti and Fabio Biancalana show that the solitonization of the Anderson localization and the formation of optical horizons by cluster of solitons explain the rogue-solitons in supercontinuum generation.

MRS Fall Meeting 2018 (Boston): Tailored Disorder – Call for Papers

We are announcing the Tailored Disorder Symposium at the MRS (Material Research Society) Fall Meeting 2018 Disorder and perturbed periodicity in materials are in the process of becoming a vital research area that has started to show that optical media do not necessarily have to be regular. Photonic materials with deliberately introduced disorder in their respective geometries and compositions show interesting novel and tunable unforeseen properties. So far, countable scientific achievements have been reported in the areas of biology, materials science, nano-optics and -photonics that, however, already point towards a wealth of interesting effects with several applicative dimensions.

Quantum-gravity-slingshot: orbital precession due to the modified uncertainty principle, from analogs to tests of Planckian physics with quantum fluids

Modified uncertainty principle and non-commutative variables may phenomenologically account for quantum gravity effects, independently of the considered theory of quantum gravity. We show that quantum fluids enable experimental analogs and direct tests of the modified uncertainty principle expected to be valid at the Planck scale. We consider a quantum clock realized by a long-lasting quantum fluid wave-packet orbiting in a trapping potential.

Observation of Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou Recurrence and Its Exact Dynamics

Observation of Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou Recurrence and Its Exact Dynamics

One of the most controversial phenomena in nonlinear dynamics is the reappearance of initial conditions. Celebrated as the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou problem, the attempt to understand how these recurrences form during the complex evolution that leads to equilibrium has deeply influenced the entire development of nonlinear science. The enigma is rendered even more intriguing by the fact that integrable models predict recurrence as exact solutions, but the difficulties involved in upholding integrability for a sufficiently long dynamic has not allowed a quantitative experimental validation.
